Cheryl Al-Mateen, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University, leads the education core.

Education Goal

To promote and measure education, attitudes, skills and knowledge of health care professionals, staff and students regarding health disparities among patients and communities served.

Strategies to Attain Goal

Priority 1: Identify and prioritize the educational needs of the VCU health care professions, staff and students regarding the health care disparities within the diverse communities served by the VCU and the VCU Health System.

Priority 2: Develop and facilitate education and training for VCU and VCU Health System faculty, administrators, staff and students to support the concept of improving cultural competence and health literacy as they relate to health care.

Priority 3: Inventory, promote and disseminate the institutional knowledge base including programs, services and resources available at VCU and the VCU Health System that address health disparities and health literacy issues.
